Reverse calculation method in interior ballistics and improvement of multiphysics models (2023-2026)

This is a project funded by the Spanish Ministry of Defence under the auspicies of the European Defence Agency.

It is being carried out in the framework of an international collaboration whose participants are

• Ariane Group Centre de Recherches du Bouchet (AGS), France.

• Institute Franco-Allemand de Recherches de Saint-Louis (ISL), France.

• Military Institute of Armament Technology (MIAT), Poland.

• Military University of Technology (MUT), Poland.

• Military Technical Academy (MTA ), Romania.

• Technical University of Cartagena (UPCT), Spain.

• Defence University Centre of San Javier (CUD/AGA), Spain.

• Swedish Defence Research Agency (FOI), Sweden.

Its objectives are

• To develop new numerical models in order to implement a reverse calculation method in interior ballistics.

• To improve existing models in order to increase the predictive ability of multiphysics interior ballistics codes.

• To develop a methodology for acquisition of input data applied in modelling of interior ballistics phenomena.

• To propose the benchmark cases for verification of interior ballistics models’ solutions.

The RECBALL project will be a starting point for developing a novel reverse calculation method for identifying new grain geometries as well as for improving the existing models in order to predict the effects during the ignition phase. It will strengthen our knowledge base for the phenomena involved in the interior ballistic cycle, and it will provide new efficient solutions on the design of propellant grains, that will eventually result in enhanced features of propelling systems. In addition, that will also be allowed to improving propellant characteristics, design of ammunition and developing new simulation tools.
