Laboratory of Hydraulic Engineering

Laboratory of Hydraulic Engineering

Presentation:
The Laboratory of Hydraulic Engineering was created in the year 2002 as a result of the creation of the Civil Engineering Degree - Specialty in Hydrology. The Laboratory is being equipped with state-of-the-art instrumentation and is currently a fundamental support piece in the formative and research tasks (under the new European framework of Degree, Postgraduate and Doctorate studies).

The Laboratory belongs to the "Spanish Technological Network of Hydraulics Laboratories, RLHE" part of the National Networking Program (National R&D&I Plan 2008-2011), and has been created with the generic goal of opening an exchange forum for the main research centers of Hydraulic Engineering in Spain.

Services offered:
The main activity is the study of hydraulic structures (e.g. rivers) in reduced physical models, as well as hydrological and hydraulic mathematical modelling.

Equipment:
The facilities of the laboratory cover a surface of 600 m2 at the moment, but there are plans to enlarge them.

The available infrastructure allows for the study of turbulent jets and hydraulic energy dissipation bowls, to advance in the knowledge of two-phase flows phenomena (water-air): aeration-atomization, diffusion and impact.

The main characteristics are the following:

  • Variable fall height: From 1,70 m to 4,00 m
  • Range of flows: 30-180 l/s
The main equipment available to record the different hydraulic variables is the following:

  • Flowmeter (thin wall and venturis)
  • Speed meters (pitots, propeller flow meters, hot wire anemometers and Doppler effect probes)
  • Aeration meters and fiber-optic speed meters
  • Piezoresistive pressure transducers
  • Photography and video equipment. High-speed camera

The main simulation and optimization models for hydrological and hydraulic studies (public, commercial and/or developed by members of the group) are also located in the laboratory.
